M&S and Next confirm Boxing Day store closures

M&S and Next have revealed they will shut stores on Boxing Day, to enable workers to “spend more time with loved ones”.

Although many major retailers will open on 26 December as shoppers snatch up the Boxing Day sales, M&S has said it will stay shut until 27 December, Drapers reported.

The clothing and food retailer said: “Our stores, support centres and distribution centres will be closed on Boxing Day so colleagues can spend more time with loved ones, but the majority of stores will reopen on the 27 December for our seasonal sale.”

Additionally, fashion giant Next will keep its stores shut on 26 December.

Back in September, John Lewis confirmed it would close its standalone stores on Boxing Day, with only its Trafford and Stratford shopping centre shops remaining open.

The majority of Waitrose stores will also shut on 25 and 26 December, The Sun reported, meaning over 300 Waitrose and 37 John Lewis sites will remain closed on Boxing Day.

However, some of the premium supermarket’s sites attached to petrol stations will reportedly stay open on Boxing Day.

In October, trade union Usdaw urged more retailers to shut up shop on Boxing Day, as Poundland also confirmed it would close on 26 December.
