Moonpig launches AI handwriting tool

Moonpig has launched an artificial intelligence-driven handwriting tool in a bid to recreate the authenticity of handwritten messages in its made-to-order cards.

Customers are able to create their own digital handwriting by drawing each letter of the alphabet in lower and upper-case, which will then be stored in their account as a personalised font, The Times reported.

Moonpig chief executive Nickyl Raithatha said: “Handwriting has always been a big barrier for people not wanting to send cards online because they don’t feel it’s personal enough.

“This product bridges the gap between digital convenience and heartfelt, handwritten personalisation.”

The technology took the company’s AI team a year to build and will shortly be followed by AI-generated stickers, which it plans to launch by the end of the year.

Moonpig said earlier this month it had swung to a pre-tax loss of £33.3m for the six months to end of October, against an £18.9m profit the year before.

The etailer posted a 3.8% increase in revenue to £158m, driven by strong sales at its Moonpig brand that helped to offset some of the ongoing challenges in its experiences division.
